Gematria: The Ultimate Guide to Its History, Meaning and Methods

Gematria is a way of reading words through the numerical values of their letters. That definition sounds wonderfully simple. The arithmetic usually is. The meaning isn’t.
When two Hebrew words add up to the same number, a reader may place them beside one another and ask whether the shared value reveals a relationship. Sometimes that relationship becomes a mnemonic. Sometimes it supports a teaching already found in the text. In particular mystical traditions, it can become part of a meditation on language, creation and the names of God.
What the calculation can’t do on its own is tell us why the relationship matters. Two words can share a number without sharing a meaning. The sum gives us an equivalence. The interpretation comes from the text, the tradition, the method and the person doing the reading.
That distinction is the heart of gematria. It lets us approach the practice with curiosity and respect without turning every numerical match into proof of a hidden code.
What is gematria?
Gematria is most closely associated with the Jewish practice of assigning numerical values to Hebrew letters and using those values in textual interpretation. Because each letter can function as both a sound and a number, a word has a written meaning and a numerical total.
For example, the Hebrew word chai, meaning life, is written with two letters. Chet has a value of 8 and yod has a value of 10. Together, they equal 18. This association between life and 18 is why Jewish gifts and charitable donations are often made in multiples of 18. Gematria is often described simply as Hebrew numerology. That can be useful as a quick introduction, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Numerology is a much broader category that can include systems based on birth dates, names, life path numbers or beliefs about the qualities of individual numbers. Gematria is more specifically concerned with the numerical values of letters, words and phrases, especially within Hebrew texts and Jewish interpretive traditions.
Greek culture developed a comparable letter-number practice known as isopsephy. Later Christian Cabalists and Western occultists adapted Jewish and Greek materials into their own systems. Modern English gematria calculators have extended the idea again, often using several competing ways of assigning values to the English alphabet.
So gematria isn’t one timeless method that has remained unchanged for thousands of years. It’s better understood as a family of related interpretive practices with different histories, rules and sources of authority.
How does Hebrew gematria work?
In the most familiar Hebrew system, each letter has a set numerical value. The first nine letters represent 1 to 9. The next nine represent the tens from 10 to 90. The final four represent 100 to 400.

To calculate a word, you add the values of its letters. The four Hebrew letters conventionally transliterated as YHWH, for example, have the values 10, 5, 6 and 5. Together, they total 26. That doesn’t automatically tell us what 26 means in every situation. It explains why 26 can become significant when a particular Jewish or Kabbalistic teaching is already concerned with the divine name.
The standard calculation is often called mispar hechrechi, or absolute value. But it isn’t the only method.
Some of the main gematria methods
Mispar hechrechi uses the familiar values from 1 to 400.
Mispar siduri gives each letter its ordinal position in the alphabet, from 1 to 22.
Mispar katan reduces the values to single digits. Letters valued at 10 or 100 can therefore be treated as 1, while 20 and 200 can be treated as 2.
Mispar gadol may give the five final letter forms values from 500 to 900 rather than treating them like their ordinary forms.
Milui, sometimes called a filling, calculates the value of the letters used to spell out the name of each letter. Because some letter names have more than one possible spelling, this can create additional variations.
Historical sources preserve many more methods. The important point for a beginner is that a gematria total isn’t always self-explanatory. Before comparing results, you need to know which system was used, how the word was spelled and whether final letters were treated differently. This is one reason two calculators can give you different answers without either calculator necessarily making a basic arithmetic mistake.
Where did gematria come from?
The honest answer is that gematria has a history, but it doesn’t have one perfectly tidy birthday.
Its essential condition is a writing system in which letters can also represent numbers. Once letters have numerical values, people can count names and words, notice equal totals and create relationships between them. But the existence of letter-numerals doesn’t prove that every culture used them for the same interpretive purpose.
The Sargon II origin story
One of the oldest examples frequently connected with gematria comes from the Assyrian king Sargon II in the eighth century BCE. An inscription says that he made the wall of his new city 16,283 cubits in circumference in correspondence with his name.
It’s a fascinating example of a name being connected with a number. It also needs a large asterisk.
Assyrian cuneiform wasn’t an alphabet like Hebrew or Greek, and scholars still haven’t reached a consensus about how Sargon’s name produces the figure 16,283. Assyriologist Eckart Frahm describes the riddle as essentially unresolved in his study of Sargon II’s name and royal onomastics.
Sargon’s wall may be an early example of name-number symbolism or a Mesopotamian analogue to gematria. It can’t securely establish that later Hebrew gematria descended directly from one known Assyrian calculation.
Greek isopsephy and alphabetic numbers
The Greek alphabetic numeral system is more directly comparable because Greek letters themselves received numerical values. Greek isopsephy used those values to compare names, words and phrases. It could appear in inscriptions, poetry, riddles, jokes and religious material.
The best-attested chronology currently suggests that Greek alphabetic numerals became regular in the late fourth and third centuries BCE, with some earlier examples. Direct evidence for Hebrew letter-numerals appears later, including Hasmonean coins from the second century BCE. Alexander Kulik’s recent study in the Harvard Theological Review also cautions against treating every proposed number pattern in the Hebrew Bible as uncontested evidence of early gematria.
This doesn’t prove that ancient Hebrew writers knew nothing about numerical symbolism before the surviving evidence. Absence of direct evidence isn’t proof of absence. It does mean we should separate what is archaeologically attested from what is possible, traditional or reconstructed later.
When does gematria appear in Jewish interpretation?
Numerical gematria appears more clearly in rabbinic interpretation. It became one of several methods through which readers could draw connections within scripture, support a teaching or preserve an idea in a memorable form.
One of the best-known examples concerns Abraham’s 318 retainers in Genesis 14:14. In the Babylonian Talmud, a teaching proposes that the number actually points to Abraham’s servant Eliezer because the numerical value of Eliezer’s name is 318. You can read the passage in Nedarim 32a on Sefaria.
This doesn’t require us to decide that the writer of Genesis secretly intended 318 to mean Eliezer. The example shows how a later reader could use numerical equivalence to open another interpretive layer. The literal story and the gematria reading don’t have to perform the same job.
In much rabbinic material, gematria functions as support, allusion or memory aid rather than the sole foundation of an argument. That matters because modern explanations sometimes make it sound as though any numerical match was automatically accepted as decisive proof. The historical picture is more restrained and more interesting.
Is gematria part of Kabbalah?
Yes, gematria became important within some Kabbalistic traditions. No, Kabbalah isn’t simply a system of gematria.
Kabbalah is a diverse Jewish esoteric tradition that developed historically through a number of schools, texts and practices. Traditional accounts may understand its wisdom as far older, even as a primordial or revealed teaching. Historical scholarship generally traces recognisable medieval Kabbalah from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries while acknowledging its relationship with older Jewish mystical and esoteric traditions.
These are different kinds of genealogy. A religious tradition may speak about the timeless or revealed source of its wisdom, while a historian asks when particular texts, terms and communities can be documented. We don’t have to make one question pretend to be the other.
Gematria became especially prominent among the Hasidei Ashkenaz, or German Pietists, in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It was also used extensively by Abraham Abulafia and by Joseph Gikatilla. In Abulafia’s work, letters, divine names, numerical relationships and permutations could become part of an active contemplative practice. Gematria wasn’t merely a hunt for two amusing words with the same total. It belonged to a wider understanding of Hebrew as sacred and creative language.
But its importance varied. The Encyclopaedia Judaica overview of gematria notes that some early Sephardi Kabbalists used it sparingly, that much of the Zohar doesn’t depend heavily on it and that Moses Cordovero could present most of his system without relying on gematria. Other schools developed it with extraordinary complexity.
So it would be misleading to say that gematria is the basis of all Kabbalah. It’s one interpretive technology within a much larger world of theology, scripture, symbolism, prayer, divine names, cosmology and contemplative practice.
How did gematria move into Christian and occult traditions?
During the Renaissance, Christian thinkers began studying and adapting Jewish Kabbalistic materials. Giovanni Pico della Mirandola is often identified as the first raised-Christian writer known to have read substantial authentic Jewish Kabbalah. His famous conclusions of 1486 helped bring this material into a Christian intellectual setting.
Christian Cabala wasn’t an unchanged continuation of Jewish Kabbalah. Thinkers including Pico and Johannes Reuchlin reinterpreted Jewish texts and methods through Christian theology, often using them to support Christian claims. The Cambridge Handbook of Western Mysticism and Esotericism describes this as a distinctly Christian use of Jewish Kabbalistic material.
Later Hermetic and occult traditions transformed these ideas again, combining letter-number correspondences with ceremonial magic, astrology, tarot and other symbolic systems. The spelling Qabalah is often used for these Western esoteric developments, while Cabala is often associated with Christian forms and Kabbalah with the Jewish tradition. The spellings aren’t a perfect universal rule, but they can help us notice that we’re dealing with related yet differently situated traditions.
That historical distinction matters. When a modern book or calculator uses the word gematria, it may be drawing from Jewish interpretation, Greek isopsephy, Christian Cabala, Hermetic Qabalah, modern numerology or a mixture of several systems. A shared label doesn’t guarantee a shared method.
Is gematria the same as numerology or angel numbers?
No, although all three practices find meaning through numbers.
Gematria calculates the numerical values of letters, words or phrases. It’s most strongly rooted in Hebrew textual interpretation, with Greek and later Christian or occult parallels and adaptations.
Numerology is a broader category. Modern numerology often calculates numbers from a person’s name or birth date, then interprets those numbers as aspects of character, purpose, cycles or compatibility.
Angel numbers usually begin with a number that someone encounters, such as 111, 222 or 11:11. The sequence is then interpreted as a spiritual message. The modern angel-number system is much newer than rabbinic gematria and doesn’t descend in a simple straight line from it.
The difference is partly about the object being interpreted. Gematria begins with letters and language. Numerology may begin with a name or date. Angel numbers begin with a noticed sequence in the environment.
Blending the three can create a lovely personal spiritual practice, but it shouldn’t be presented as one unchanged ancient tradition.
What are some famous gematria examples?
Chai and the number 18
As we’ve seen, chai, or life, totals 18. Its significance isn’t limited to an abstract equivalence. It has shaped a recognisable Jewish custom of giving in multiples of 18. This is a useful reminder that gematria can live within community, ritual and ethical action.
The divine name and 26
The Hebrew letters of YHWH total 26 in the standard system. Kabbalistic thinkers developed many more elaborate calculations involving divine names, including systems in which each letter name is written out in full. These interpretations belong to particular theological contexts, so 26 shouldn’t be treated as a universal prediction or a free-floating number with one fixed message for everyone.
Eliezer and 318
The Talmudic connection between Eliezer and Abraham’s 318 retainers is probably the clearest example of gematria as scriptural interpretation. It demonstrates a relationship between an explicit number and the value of a nearby name.
Nero Caesar and 666
One influential interpretation of the number of the beast in Revelation proposes that a Hebrew spelling of “Nero Caesar” totals 666. An alternative spelling without the final letter of Nero can total 616, which is significant because 616 appears in ancient manuscripts as a variant reading.
This makes Nero a compelling historical candidate, but the interpretation isn’t beyond debate. Scholars have proposed other names and symbolic explanations. The manuscript variation strengthens the Nero theory without transforming it into absolute certainty. Research on the ancient 616 variant is a perfect example of how textual history can complicate a number that popular culture treats as fixed and obvious.
Why can gematria calculators produce so many matches?
A gematria calculator can be genuinely useful. It saves time, reduces arithmetic mistakes and lets you compare words using several methods. It can also create the illusion that every match must be significant.
Imagine a database containing thousands of words and phrases. Now add several ciphers, alternate spellings, different languages, optional spaces and transliterations. The number of possible equivalences grows quickly. If you’re free to keep changing the phrase or calculation method until something exciting appears, you’ll almost certainly find a match.
I think of this as the match abundance problem. The more matches a tool can produce, the more context we need before selecting one as meaningful.
This doesn’t make every result empty. It means the meaning isn’t contained in the total alone. A responsible interpretation asks why these particular words were chosen, whether the method was selected in advance, whether the relationship is supported by the surrounding text and whether an equally dramatic opposite conclusion could be produced just as easily.
The risk becomes greater when an online calculator is used to prove that unrelated people and events are secretly connected. At that point, gematria can shift from interpretation into a machine for manufacturing certainty. Any result can be made to look inevitable once we forget how many other phrases and methods were available.
The difference between a numerical observation and an interpretation
Suppose two words have the same value under a clearly named gematria system.
The statement “these words have the same value” is an arithmetic observation. Someone else can repeat the calculation and check it.
The statement “these words are spiritually connected” is an interpretation. It may be thoughtful, beautiful and rooted in a particular tradition, but it requires more than addition.
The statement “this match proves that a future event will happen” is a much larger claim. The shared value doesn’t provide enough evidence for it.
This is the arithmetic-interpretive gap. Naming it doesn’t drain gematria of mystery. It protects the difference between contemplation and certainty.
A poem can reveal something without functioning as a court document. A symbol can help you meet part of your experience without becoming an external authority. Gematria can work in a similar way. It may bring two ideas into conversation, create a memorable teaching or invite you to see a familiar text differently. It doesn’t have to prove an objective secret to have value.
Can gematria predict the future?
Gematria has been used throughout history to support messianic claims, identify political figures and interpret current events. Modern users sometimes calculate names, dates and headlines in the hope of uncovering what will happen next.
The problem is that a numerical match is flexible. Different spellings, languages, ciphers and phrase choices can produce different results. A convincing prediction can often be constructed after an event has already happened, when the interpreter knows which names and details to select.
Gematria may help someone reflect on a question or place an event within a spiritual story. It can’t, by itself, establish that a prediction is true. It shouldn’t carry the weight of a decision about your health, safety, money, relationships or future.
If a practice begins making you feel that every name, date or headline contains an urgent instruction, it may be time to step away from the calculator and return to what is directly known. Mystery can open us. It shouldn’t have to frighten us into surrendering our judgement.
How to explore gematria thoughtfully
You don’t have to choose between unquestioning belief and total dismissal. There’s a more grounded way to engage with the practice.
1. Name the system you’re using
State whether you’re using standard Hebrew values, reduced values, ordinal values, Greek isopsephy or a modern English cipher. If the method changes halfway through, notice what that change makes possible.
2. Begin with language and context
Traditional gematria belongs to texts, commentaries and communities. Ask where a word appears, what it means in that language and why the relationship would matter within that setting.
3. Separate the sum from the story
First check the arithmetic. Then name the interpretation you’re placing around it. This small pause makes room for curiosity without disguising interpretation as fact.
4. Ask whether the connection existed before the calculation
Did the text, tradition or subject already place these ideas near one another? Is the gematria deepening a relationship, or is the match the only reason the relationship exists?
Neither answer automatically makes the exploration worthless. It simply tells you what kind of claim you’re making.
5. Look for alternatives
Try other relevant spellings or methods. Search for counterexamples. If the same technique can prove several opposing conclusions, it isn’t a reliable form of proof.
6. Treat the result as a question, not a command
Instead of asking, “What is this number telling me to do?” you might ask:
What relationship is this match inviting me to consider?
What part of the text becomes more visible when these words are placed together?
Is this interpretation rooted in a tradition, or am I creating a personal association?
Does the result open reflection, or is it being used to eliminate uncertainty?
What do I know without the number?
7. Keep your agency
Gematria can be a contemplative companion. It shouldn’t become a substitute for evidence, consent, discernment or responsibility. You’re still the person who must choose how to act.

The words “on its own” matter. A gematria relationship may sit alongside strong textual or historical evidence. It may be meaningful inside a tradition that already connects the ideas. The calculation can contribute to an interpretation. It simply can’t carry every possible claim by itself.
Gematria turns a code into a conversation
Gematria begins with a beautiful property of language: a letter can have more than one life. It can be a sound, a shape, a number, a memory and part of a sacred text. When letters become numbers, words enter relationships that ordinary reading might never reveal.
But the number is the doorway, not the whole room.
The arithmetic tells us that two words meet. It doesn’t tell us what they say to one another. For that, we need language, history, tradition, imagination and discernment.
Perhaps the deepest way to approach gematria isn’t as a universal code waiting to be cracked. Perhaps it’s a practice of relationship: between letters and numbers, text and reader, inheritance and interpretation, the measurable and the mysterious.
You can let that mystery remain alive without asking it to become proof.
